Strombus auricularius was named by Grateloup (1834) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene; Europe, Iran.]. It is not a trace fossil.
It was corrected as Strombus auriculatus by Fuchs (1870); it was recombined as Canarium (Oostrombus) auriculatum by Karagiuleva (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Strombus tournoueri by Ozsvart (1999); it was recombined as Oostrombus auricularius by Harzhauser (2004).
