Volutilithes (Athleta) pygmaeus was named by Bellardi (1890) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene; Mediterranean.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was corrected as Volutilithes (Athleta) pygmaea by Ferrero-Mortara (1981); it was recombined as Athleta pygmaea by Sacco (1904) and Harzhauser (2004).
