Taxonomy
Eretiscus was named by Olson (1986) [Replacement name for Microdytes Simpson (1981) preoccupied by Mirodytes Balfour-Browne, 1949 (Coleoptera)].

It was assigned to Palaeospheniscinae by Acosta Hospitaleche et al. (2004) and Ksepka et al. (2006); and to Spheniscidae by Olson (1986) and Acosta Hospitaleche and Tambussi (2008).
