Phoca vitulina sibirica was named by Gmelin (1788). It is extant.

It was recombined as Phoca (Pusa) sibirica by Allen (1880) and McLaren (1960); it was recombined as Phoca (Phoca) sibirica by Trouessart (1898); it was recombined as Pusa hispida sibirica by Trouessart (1904); it was recombined as Phoca sibirica by Thomas et al. (1982) and Riedman (1990); it was recombined as Pusa sibirica by Scheffer and Rice (1963), Rice (1998), Koretsky and Barnes (2006), Cullen et al. (2014), Berta et al. (2018) and Kienle and Berta (2019).
