Cryptoproctina was named by Gray (1865). It is extant. Its type is Cryptoprocta.

It was reranked as the subfamily Cryptoproctinae by Mivart (1882); it was reranked as the family Cryptoproctidae by Flower (1869) and Cope (1889).

It was assigned to Viverridae by Mivart (1882); and to Fissipedia by Flower (1869) and Cope (1889).
