Umbilia was named by Jousseaume (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 614. TYPE LOCALITY: Recent, south-eastern Australia]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Cypraea (Umbilia) by Wilson (1993).

It was assigned to Cypraea by Wilson (1993); to Cypraeidae by Darragh (2002); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Zoilinae by Soriano (2006).
