Denticelox was named by Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 1046,1066]. Its type is Palaearca tortuosa.

It was assigned to Pterineidae by Pojeta and Gilbert-Tomlinson (1977); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
