Vitrinella was named by Adams (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 700]. It is extant. Its type is Vitrinella helicoidea.

It was assigned to Adeorbidae by Ladd (1966); to Vitrinellinae by Perrilliat (1972) and Abbott (1974); to Vitrinellidae by Gardner (1947), Weisbord (1962) and Todd (2001); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
