Monodonta araonis was named by Basterot (1825) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; France.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Trochus araonis by Deshayes (1839); it was recombined as Clanculus araonis by Pisera (1985); it was recombined as Clanculus (Clanculopsis) araonis by Cossmann and Peyrot (1917) and Lozouet et al. (2001).
