Apoda was named by Oppel (1810). It is extant.

It was reranked as the suborder Apoda by Gadow (1898); it was reranked as the superorder Apoda by Gardiner (1982); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Gymnophiona by Dundee (1989); it was reranked as the unranked clade Apoda by Maddin et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Lissamphibia by Gadow (1898); to Lissamphibia by Gardiner (1982); and to Gymnophiona by Gardner (2001) and Maddin et al. (2012).
