Lavocatia was named by Canudo and Cuenca-Bescós (1996). Its type is Lavocatia alfambrensis.
It was assigned to Paulchoffatiinae by Canudo and Cuenca-Bescós (1996); and to Pinheirodontidae by Hahn and Hahn (1999), Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001) and Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).
