Taxonomy
Symmetrolestes was named by Tsubamoto and Rougier (2004) [Mammalia, Trechnotheria, Spalacotheriidae. Symmetrolestes Tsubamoto and Rougier (in Tsubamoto et al., 2004)]. Its type is Symmetrolestes parvus.

It was assigned to Spalacotheriidae by Tsubamoto et al. (2004), Li and Luo (2006) and Han and Meng (2016).
