Wexfordia was named by Harmer (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio]. Its type is Wexfordia dautzenbergi.

It was assigned to Polinicinae by Wenz (1941); to Trichotropidae by Kabat (1991); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
