Myanmarpithecus was named by Takai et al. (2001) [Mammalia, Primates, Amphipithecidae]. Its type is Myanmarpithecus yarshensis. It was considered monophyletic by Beard et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Anthropoidea by Takai et al. (2001); to Amphipithecidae by Kay et al. (2004); to Amphipithecidae by Marivaux et al. (2005); and to Amphipithecinae by Beard et al. (2009).
