Nerita picta was named by Férussac (1825). It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Neritina picta by Férussac (1825), Hanna (1926) and Harzhauser and Mandic (2001); it was recombined as Theodoxus (Vittoclithon) pictus by Wenz (1929); it was recombined as Clithon pictus by Senes (1958); it was recombined as Vitta picta by Lozouet et al. (2001); it was recombined as Agapilia picta by Harzhauser and Kowalke (2001), Binder (2004) and Harzhauser (2004).
