Pileopsis ancyliformis was named by Grateloup (1828) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; France.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Capulus ancyliformis by d'Orbigny (1852); it was recombined as Plesiothyreus ancyliformis by Lozouet et al. (2001).
