Zaria was named by Gray (1842) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sn R]. It is extant. Its type is Turbo duplicatus.
It was assigned to Zariinae by Gray (1850); to Turritellidae by Shuto (1974); to Pareorinae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Allmon (1996); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Turritellinae by van den Hoek Ostende et al. (2002), Bouchet et al. (2005) and Harzhauser et al. (2009).
