Taxonomy
Melanopsis cepula was named by Guppy (1866) [DISTRIBUTION: Micoene-Pliocene; Caribbean.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Crepitacella.

It was recombined as Crepitacella cepula by Guppy (1867), Maury (1917), Woodring (1928) and Perrilliat (1972).
