Murex anus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific]. It is extant. It is the type species of Distorsio, Distorsio (Distorsio).
It was recombined as Distorsio (Distorsio) anus by Woodring (1928); it was recombined as Distorsio anus by Röding (1798), Pilsbry (1922), Harzhauser et al. (2009) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
