Aeshnoidea was named by Leach (1815). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Jarzembowski (1988).

It was assigned to Anisoptera by Jarzembowski (1988) and Nel and Martínez-Delclòs (1993); and to Euaeshnodea by Bechly (2007).
