Murex colus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Fusinus.

It was recombined as Fusinus colus by Rafinesque (1815), Woodring (1964) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
