Pleurotoma venusta was named by Sowerby (1850) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Caribbean.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was corrected as Pleurotoma venustum by Guppy (1866); it was recombined as Turris (Drillia) venusta by Gabb (1873); it was recombined as Pleurotoma (Drillia) venusta by Dall (1903); it was recombined as Drillia venusta by Maury (1917) and Olsson (1922); it was recombined as Clathrodrillia venusta by Woodring (1928), Woodring (1970) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
