Aesopus was named by Gould (1860) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 909]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pyrenidae by Gardner (1948); to Pyreninae by Wilson (1994); to Columbellidae by Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
