Cythara gibba was named by Guppy (1896) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. Its type specimen is USNM 107144, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Brachycythara gibba by Woodring (1928) and Hendy et al. (2008).
