Cancellaria chrysostoma was named by Sowerby (1832) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Eastern Pacific.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Bivetopsia.

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Bivetopsis) chrysostoma by Cossmann (1899); it was recombined as Cancellaria (Bivetopsia) chrysostoma by Landau et al. (2007); it was recombined as Bivetopsia chrysostoma by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010), Landau et al. (2012) and Landau et al. (2012).
