Pleurotoma gibbosa was named by Reeve (1843) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Indian Ocean.]. It is extant. It is the type species of Clathrodrillia.

It was recombined as Clathrodrillia gibbosa by Dall (1918) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
