Thamnastraea major was named by Ferry (1861). It is not extant.

It was recombined as Thamnasteria major by Geyer (1954); it was recombined as Fungiastraea major by Rosendahl (1985); it was recombined as Microsolena major by Baron-Szabo (2018).
