Mitra tortuosa was named by Gabb (1873) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Vexillum (Uromitra) tortuosa by Woodring (1928); it was recombined as Uromitra tortuosa by Hendy et al. (2008).
