Cancellaria acalypta was named by Woodring (1970) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene; Panama.]. Its type specimen is USNM 645730, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Cancellaria (Cancellaria) acalypta by Landau et al. (2007).
