Apiotoma was named by Cossmann (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 530]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Turriculinae by Squires (1987); to Turridae by Squires (1988); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cochlespiridae by Bouchet et al. (2011) and Darragh (2017).
