Polystira oxytropis ecuadoriana was named by Olsson (1964) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene; Ecuador, Panama.]. Its type specimen is USNM 643960, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Pleuroliria (Polystira) ecuadoriana by Woodring (1970); it was recombined as Polystira ecuadoriana by Hendy et al. (2008).
