Pleurofusia acra was named by Woodring (1970) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene; Panama.]. Its type specimen is USNM 645764, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Fusiturricula acra by Hendy et al. (2008).
