Oliva purpurata was named by Swainson (1831) [DISTRIBUTION: Recent; Eastern Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Olivella purpurata by Dall (1909); it was recombined as Olivella (Olivella) purpurata by Woodring (1928) and Hendy et al. (2008).
