Aspella was named by Mörch (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Trophon (Aspella) by Dall (1892).

It was assigned to Trophon by Dall (1892); to Muricinae by Vokes (1975) and Wilson (1994); to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002); and to Muricidae by Todd (2001) and Landau et al. (2007).
