Murex pennae was named by Maury (1934) [DISTRIBUTION: Early-Late Miocene; Dominican Republic-Brazil.]. Its type specimen is PRI 29313, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rio Pirabas (Maury coll.), which is in a Miocene shallow subtidal limestone/limestone in the Pirabas Formation of Brazil.
It was recombined as Murex (Murex) pennae by Vokes (1963); it was recombined as Murex (Haustellum) pennae by Vokes (1989).
