Murex cornurectus was named by Guppy (1876). It is extant. Its type specimen is BMNH GG 20254, a shell.

It was recombined as Murex (Phyllonotus) cornurectus by Maury (1917) and Olsson (1922); it was synonymized subjectively with Murex (Chicoreus) brevifrons by Woodring (1959); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Chicoreus) cornurectus by Vokes (1965), Vokes (1974) and Vokes (1989); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Triplex) cornurectus by Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
