Murex (Phyllonotus) infrequens was named by Vokes (1963) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; Caribbean.]. Its type specimen is USNM 644374, a shell, and it is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Chicoreus (Phyllonotus) infrequens by Vokes (1989).
