Murex pomum was named by Gmelin (1791) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Miocene-Recent; Caribbean, Western Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Murex (Phyllonotus) pomum by Woodring (1928) and Olsson and Harbison (1953); it was recombined as Phyllonotus pomum by Fair (1976); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Phyllonotus) pomum by Vokes (1989).
