Murex clathratus was named by Linnaeus (1767) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene-Recent; Caribbean.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Trophon clathratus by Verkrüzen (1881); it was recombined as Trophonopsis clathratus by Norton (1975); it was recombined as Boreotrophon clathratus by Hendy et al. (2008).
