Buccinum lapillus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Western Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Purpura lapillus by Rigacci (1866) and Wood (1879); it was recombined as Thais lapillus by Richards (1962); it was recombined as Nucella lapillus by Hendy et al. (2008).
