Mitra varicosa was named by Sowerby (1850) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Borsonia (Paraborsonia) varicosa by Pilsbry (1922); it was recombined as Paraborsonia varicosa by Petuch (1988).
