Taxonomy
Murex (Pteronotus) compactus was named by Gabb (1873) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 3258, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Murex compactus by Maury (1917) and Maury (1917); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Chicoreus) compactus by Vokes (1965); it was recombined as Chicoreus (Naquetia) compactus by Vokes (1989).
