Purpura miocenica was named by Guppy (1874) [DISTRIBUTION: Miocene-Pliocene; Dominican Republic.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Coralliophila miocenica by Dall (1903), Maury (1917) and Landau and Marques da Silva (2010).
