Buccinofusus was named by Conrad (1868) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Buccinidae by Martin (1904); to Fasciolariidae by Abbass (1967) and Petuch (1988); to Fusininae by Ward (1992); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
