Venus mercenaria was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene-Recent; Massachusetts-Georgia.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Venus (Mercenaria) mercenaria by Gardner (1943); it was recombined as Mercenaria mercenaria by Hendy et al. (2008).
