Patella rubella was named by Fabricius (1780) [DISTRIBUTION: Pleistocene-Recent; Northern Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Acmaea rubella by Bennike et al. (1994); it was recombined as Erginus rubellus by Hendy et al. (2008).
