Calotrophon was named by Hertlein and Strong (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Muricinae by Vokes (1976); to Muricidae by Petuch (1988) and Todd (2001); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
