Parapodemus vireti was named by Schaub (1938) [Schaub (1938) assigned this species to Parapodemus with a question mark.]. Its type specimen is NMB P.L. 61, a tooth (M1 sin.). Its type locality is Mollon, which is in a MN 11 terrestrial horizon in France.
It was recombined as Huerzelerimys vireti by Martín Suárez and Freudenthal (1993).
