Cancilla was named by Swainson (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 550]. It is extant. Its type is Tiara isabella.

It was reranked as Mitra (Cancilla) by Vredenburg (1925) and MacNeil (1960).

It was assigned to Mitra by Vredenburg (1925) and MacNeil (1960); to Mitridae by Ladd (1977) and Ladd (1982); to Imbricariinae by Wilson (1993) and Davoli (2000); and to Neogastropoda by Sepkoski (2002).
