Taxonomy
Stauranderaster argus was named by Spencer (1907). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Holotype BNHM E 5019, Paratypes BNHM E 2566, BNHM E 20294.

It was recombined as Tholaster argus by Spencer (1913) and Umbgrove (1925); it was recombined as Valettaster argus by Valette (1915), Mercier (1935), Mercier (1936), Breton (1985), Breton (1986), Néraudeau and Breton (1993), Lewis (1993) and Gale (2021).

G. Breton 1985Ossicles with a dome-shaped upper side, without radial structures as in V. ocellatus. Adambulacrals with 4 rows of spine bases parallel to the furrow. The adradial row is the more conspicuous and bears 5 stout tubercles for the articulation of spines.
A.S. Gale 2021Valettaster in which the abactinal ossicles possess small external faces and bear a reticulate sculpture.
